Kayakalp: Paradise on Earth

On July 25, 2018July 25, 2018 By Carolyn Herbst LewisIn Reflection, TravelLeave a comment

I dreamt a few nights ago that I was packing to return to India. My backpack was open, and I was considering which clothes to tuck inside. I was heading to Kayakalp, and I couldn't wait to get there. Ever since I returned from India a few weeks ago, I have been thinking about when …

A Time for Lavender

On July 15, 2018 By Carolyn Herbst LewisIn Reflection1 Comment

Ask someone to name medicinal herbs, and they are likely to include lavender in their list. Lavender has long been appreciated for its many uses -- such as the herb's alleged ability to preserve one's chastity (when carried in a sachet), its aid in relieving headaches or melancholy, and even its antimicrobial properties for cleaning …

Dandelions and Violets

On May 8, 2018 By Carolyn Herbst LewisIn ReflectionLeave a comment

The last few weeks have been filled with much excitement. In addition to finalizing travel plans for my upcoming global adventures, I turned 42, and I heard that my colleagues voted to promote me to associate professor with tenure in recognition of my scholarship, teaching, and service. On top of all of this good news, …

A Cup of Gratitude for Fibromyalgia

On April 6, 2018April 6, 2018 By Carolyn Herbst LewisIn Reflection2 Comments

Five years ago, I made a career move from a large research institution in the Deep South to a small liberal arts college in the Midwest. This was and continues to be one of the best things that has happened in my life. Not only do I have my dream job, but my spouse, son, …

Soul Nourishing: Smoothies, Self-Care, and Friends

On March 10, 2018 By Carolyn Herbst LewisIn Recipes2 Comments

There is nothing Earth-shattering or paradigm-shifting about my smoothie recipe, but each ingredient is included with purpose that goes beyond the pleasures of flavor. Perhaps even more importantly, my smoothie recipe is a derivative of one made for me by a dear friend. Every time I make my smoothie, I think of her and the circle of women who sustain me and nourish my soul.

I am a fast reader. Recently, I’ve slowed down. I seem to have chosen a short stack of books that demand closer attention. This is especially true of this one. I have found myself re-reading paragraphs, not because I don’t understand them, but rather because I do. They are speaking so directly to my spirit that I can’t help but want to read them again and again, letting the words and messages sink in more fully, staying in that moment a bit longer. Thank you, @tokopa for such a beautiful book to feed my soul and light my path.
The arthritis and fibro pain continue. I’m pushing back against the impulse to hide under the covers. Getting on my treadmill for short, slow walks helps me feel stronger.

Our temps have plunged in the last couple of days. For me, this means confronting the physical reality of chronic pain. This is not something I can ignore or push through. It is here. It is real. This morning, I decided to lean into it. The pain is here for a reason, with purpose. It’s time I let it teach me what it’s here to teach me. So, I closed my eyes, I focused on my breath, and I asked it what it wanted me to know. I found myself becoming increasingly aware of my hands. The pain in my hands is intense. I resist the urge to curl them into fists. I let myself feel every aspect of the pain. I trace the pain in my mind, feeling the details of each finger, each knuckle, each cuticle. The pain is like a high-pitched keen. Shrill. Intense. Terrifying. My hands feel like boney claws. Crone’s claws. The Crone. I see myself as Crone. I am only 43. I still bleed. Even so, my Crone time is here. As I contemplate my hands, they begin to warm. I open my eyes, and I see how they are inflamed. I know my rings would be tight. I open and close my fists, and the skin stretches painfully across knuckles. I rest them back on my lap, and gaze at them. These hands. They are not only my own. They are the hands of my mother and my grandmother. I remember holding my grandmother’s hand in mine as she was dying. Her knuckles were enlarged, fingers gnarled. And yet they looked so much like my own. I wonder now if this is how her hands felt at 43. #chronicpain #crone #cronewisdom #hedgewitch #greenwitch #cailleach
