A Cup of Sage Tea: Induced Abortion Has a Long History in Women’s Health Care

On January 22, 2018January 22, 2018 By Carolyn Herbst LewisIn HerbsLeave a comment

I often teach the history of herbal contraceptives in my courses, but I had never heard that common garden sage was on the list of potential pregnancy dangers. Sage is another reminder of the long history of induced abortion in women's health care.

Puppies. Sigh.
Getting ready for another HerbsThyme event with students from @grinnellcollege tonight! I have a homemade veggie soup simmering on the stove to fortify us in this blustery weather. Then, we will be discussing herbal support for congestion and sore throats. We will focus on four herbs: sage, mint, bee balm, and marshmallow. Students will also be able to take home any herbs they want to try. I also give full access to my library and supplies. I love sharing this knowledge and passion with them! #herbalism #iowaherbalist #iowaherbalism #selfcare #homebasedbusiness #empowerment #healthandwellness #community #grinnell #myvillage
Decided that I needed to get out of the house, so I headed to my campus office. The snow started just as I arrived. My hip is achy; my office is cozy. #winteriniowa #winterishere #snow #sabbatical
Today was full of art. First, I went to the local artists market and brought home several beautiful pieces. Then, I came home and made these. I found the tiles in my basement. Must be leftovers from when the previous owners tiled the bathroom. The paints are all so old that some are granular. And the flowers and plants are from my yard. Actually, I gathered the plants on the green one on a plant walk at a conference on Vashon Island this summer.
This is how my dogs think I should spend my time.
